The Ingilbys of Ripley

1 February at 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Sir Thomas Ingilby of Ripley Castle inherited the Ripley Castle estate, aged 18 – I also inherited a colossal tax bill – so we turned the family home into a hospitality business and went from there. It was probably worse than Fawlty Towers when we started. The Ingliby’s have been at Ripley Castle for over 700 years so have seen their fair share of history. Henry Ingilby collected taxes for Edward III and finance the construction of Windsor Castle. His brother Thomas saved the king’s life and was knighted for his courage. James I stayed at the castle in 1603. By 1605 the Ingilbys were plotting to kill him: nine of the eleven known conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot were close relations or associates of the Ingilby Family. ‘Trooper’ Jane Ingilby held Oliver Cromwell prisoner overnight in the castle’s library after the Battle of Marston Moor.
